The plough anchor got it name due its striking similarities to a traditional agricultural plough, most plough anchors are based on the design of the original CQR anchors (Secure), this design dates back to the 1930's to a design by Sir Geoffrey Ingram Taylor, today the CQR anchor is popular with cruising sailors and many private boat owners as they are good in all bottoms. The hinged shank design of the CQR allows the anchor to turn with direction changes.

As such the CQR anchor has achieved a legendary status for performance, the drop forged construction of the CQR helps to increase its strength and reliability under load, whilst the hinged shank will deliver a consistent setting and holding, even in very bad conditions
